PLEASE DON'T TEXT AND DRIVE
Texting and driving has been an issue for pedestrians and motorists since the invention of the cellphone. And while talking on the phone and driving is more easily fixed with the invention and accessibility of Bluetooth technologies, texting and driving is a still a major motorist concern. It isn't a concern for just teens but for adults as well. About half of all motorists on the road report texting and driving at least once, despite many states cracking down on the dangerous behavior.
While many states use aggressive fines and jail time to curtail texting and driving, nearly 1/3 of all young adults and teens still text and drive. Texting can raise the risk of a car accident by 23 times and falls under many other distracted driving behaviors that can lower visibility, dampen response time and take your hands off the wheel. Even glancing at your phone for just 5 seconds in a car moving at 55 mph can move your car the length of a football field without you even looking at the road. Imagine missing the entire length of a football field in just a matter of seconds and all that can happen in such a short amount of time. As someone who sees far too many lives end too soon, the dangers of texting and driving are serious and should be taken seriously by motorists and pedestrians.
There are plenty of applications and devices that you can download to you or your teen's phone like SafeDrive and DriveMode that block incoming text messages once a car is noted going over 5 mph. Bluetooth technology and voice recognition built into many cars allows you a safe and hands-free response mechanism for incoming texts messages and phone calls without taking your eyes off road. Above all, we encourage all drivers to be aware of the road conditions and your vehicle at all times to minimize distractions.
